Oversize/Overweight

Under the Michigan Vehicle Code, the Saginaw County Road Commission is authorized to issue special transportation permits for the movement of vehicles and/or loads over county roads which exceed the size or weight limits specified by law. It’s the objective of the Road Commission to permit the movement of necessary overweight and oversize vehicles, or loads consistent with the following obligations: Protection of the motoring public from potential traffic hazards and protection of road surfaces, structures, and private property.

If travelling on a I-, M- or US-route in Michigan, your oversized/overweight vehicle may require a permit from the Michigan Department of Transportation. Traveling through cities and villages with nonstandard loads requires you to contact the municipality directly. Visit our ‘Links’ page for city & village contact information.

Types of Permits – Single Move, Super Move, Annual, Single Mobile Home, Annual Mobile Home, Seasonal, Special Equipment

Application – Saginaw County Road Commission’s Moving Permits are processed using a web-based permitting system called Oxcart Permits (http://www.oxcartpermits.com). See ‘Applicant Flyer’ link below. All applicants will need to create an account. Once logged into your dashboard you will select “Oversize/Overweight” and then municipality “Saginaw Road Commission, County of” – click apply for permit. Complete all required fields and select the type of permit. Submit the application and we will review. You will receive an email once it has been approved. Review the ‘Fee Schedule’ link below for permit fees.

Processing Time – Oversize permits will usually be processed and issued within 5 business days from the date received. Additional processing time may be needed for complicated applications, heavy application volume, reduced staffing levels, or Road Commission priorities.

Payment – For Oversize permits you will enter your credit card information to submit your application. This is a preauthorization only – your credit card will not be charged unless your permit is approved.

Seasonal Weight Restrictions

Seasonal weight restrictions are legal limits placed on the loads that trucks may carry. Roads thaw out from the top down each spring, trapping moisture near the surface. During the thawing period, the melting ice leaves voids underneath the pavement. Heavy loads then compress the gravel and bituminous surfaces, causing them to deteriorate. Therefore, when seasonal weight restrictions are in effect during spring thaw, the maximum allowable axle load and speed is reduced to prevent weather-related deterioration of roads.
